History of Greater North Columbia
The Columbia River as it enters the United States from Canada is the focal point for the history of our area. Known as North Columbia, it consists of three counties, Stevens County, Ferry County and Pend Oreille County. It is comprised of three colville mainstays, the city of Colville, The Colville National Forest and the twelve bands of native americans that comprise the Colville Indian Reservation.
The indigenous people of the Great Northwest gathered on the Columbia River at Kettle Falls and fished Salmon, the mainstay of their diet. It was not until 1941 that the Coulee Dam was built turning the Columbia River into what is now known as the Lake Roosevelt National Recreational Area. There are many cultural events to attend through out the year celebrating our areas rich history. We welcome you to our area and know you will enjoy the incredible recreational opportunites it offers. | ![]() |
